Washing Your Dog:
Do not be fooled. Dogs can smell yes but frequent bathing is no solution. Dogs have a thick layer of oil that covers their skin. This thick layer of oil not only provides a shiny coat when groomed but also protects from bacteria and helps the dog to regulate its body temperature. When a dog is washed with soap or similar the oil is diluted. This oil layer does smell when diluted! When diluted the dog is with a great hole in its defense system. The body has to work hard to get a new layer of oil. Frequent bathing causes the system to go haywire and excess or to little oil is produced. Illnesses occur and for what's important to many owners besides health the dog begins to constantly smell. If you groom your dog frequently you will notice a shiny coat and also that dirt is repelled by this special oil level. Another thing to state is that when a dog gets wet from rain it2s oil coat repels the water and dries of mighty quick. Bacteria and so forth will have a very poor chance of bypassing this layer of oil and reaching the skin thus eventually the blood system. Washing with shampoo is diluting the oil and at the same time mixing chemicals into the natural oil. As a rule only wash your dog when you have to. We wash our dogs 2-4 times a year at the maximum and these dogs live in our homes and people are always commenting how our houses do not smell and how clean our dogs look. The key is simple frequent grooming and minimal bathing.
If your vet tells you the opposite then we would suggest you to look for another vet. Ever noticed that a vet will not (at least a good vet) use any injections or vaccinations for your dog if it was washed that day or the day before and a good vet will tell you not to bath for at least 24 hours after the injection. Why? Well we have actually come across vets who do not know why but have been taught that that's the procedure! A bathed dog is open to infection. Simple as that. after the injection their is no scab there is very rarely any blood but the hole is there just enough for bacteria to jump in, of course that's if the dog has been bathed because naturally in such a situation the oil will cover that minute hole and protect.
We have seen many itching dogs and many dogs with rashes or allergies due to excess bathing and we have seen many who have needed long medication lasting for years to fix the natural process that was human interfered with..
