Training doesn't have to be performed by a professional, if you have time, patience and the required resources their is no reason for not training your own dog. The important facts are that you show your dog love, spare your time, provide a monotone life and understand your dogs needs.
However never try to teach your dog protection work.
All dogs that fit in th protection working group class of breed MUST attend protection classes even if just the starting level. If you own such a dog and are against or do not want your dog to do protection work then entry Schutzhund training is a must no matter what so-called animal lovers say (click here to read more).
Here at the K9 Center we provide a wide range of training programs. However just to have a dog with a title ie. K9 doesn't neccessarilly mean that you are doing the right thing. We take great pride in our work and we want both owners and dogs to be happy and benefit from our work. It is vitally important that you understand the phrase "balance" in training. The idea of trainng your dog is to ensure a happier relationship between yourself and your dog and for both of you to benefit. This means that training should only contain beneficial knowledge for both sides. All training requires life-time practice. There is no point in training your dog to perform duties that 'might' be usefull someday.
A word of advice,
Certain dog breeds such as the doberman, pitbull, rotweiller, bulldog... definately require training. the reason for this is that they are not machines and do have a mind of their own. Only a properly trained dog will be happy living in your world by your rules. At a time of crises an untrained dog will make sure that you end up following their rules in their world.
