This is a subject that I must say astonishes me the most. How people can be so ignorant and not accepet the importance of the topic. I am amazed how certain animal protection groups, dog lovers etc. can be so close eyed about this topic.
As a fact I know that their is probably no more then a hand full of people in Northern Cyprus and Turkey who know of the importance of this topic so please read on.
I have seen so many dogs were people have pointed out and called a perfect purebred dog were the dog was no where close. I have seen so many people disappointed with their dog that they paid good money for.
Dogs are very different from humans yet owners always tend to look and compare them with human beings. Dogs do not have cars and computers and aids. They are dependent on their brain, their size and proportions, and their born instincts.
A true breeder invests big money and time on their stud dogs and bitches. They heavily research each dogs past, they carefully examine every inch of their breeding dogs before they even dare think of producing.
Back yard breeders and puppy mills have no genetic knowledge, they don't know anything about temperament, proportions and so on and to be honest they don't care any way.
There are many factors that must be considered before breeding. The stud and bitch must be a proper fit. This will give the puppies a chance in life.
There are many reasons for this but lets name a few. A German Shepherd Dog as an example has a book value. It is a utile dog, intelligent, energetic, good with children, sturdy character, solid nerves, stable temperament etc. How many have you seen that fit the description. In Cyprus and Turkey not more then a hand full but hey, how many people have seen a GSD in real life up close that does fit the standards for one to compare? I thought so not many. An incorrectly bred GSD (German Shepherd Dog) may not be good with children, may not have solid nerves, may be shy, maybe aggressive or maybe all at one or many other. These are all called faults and many would be a reason for the GSD to be disqualified. Incorrect breeding can easily lead to genetic disorders like H D but hey your vets been subscribing you with calcium tablets. Heard of a vet advising every GSD to take calcium supplements anywhere else in the world? The answer is no. They advice directly against it! So ask yourself once more how many GSD's are there really in Cyprus and Turkey? The dog may look OK but if the dogs limbs are not in proportion then what? Well the answer is simple nothing. You haven't seen a real GSD to compare, you don't realize the poor sods in pain. A simple example the GSD has a far fetching ground eating gate. Seen one at work, I mean a real GSD? Most probably not, still nothing to compare to see the problem. I have seen so many so-called GSD's and so many I have seen having un proportioned limbs such as the front and rear legs. un proportioned means a struggle when trotting let alone galloping. You think the poor dogs not in pain then think again!
Well here is an advert.
We urge you to please think again before breeding your dogs or adopting one from somebody who only knows gossip of the breed. incorrect breeding means trouble. Acquiring a dog from an unprofessional breeder is a gamble and you may find out when it's to late that your dog isn't classified as a worthy pure bred dog.
Currently we are stopping all of our show-line breedings. We have two reasons for this. The first reason is that we were breeding exactly in line with the standards but the standards have become like the cloth fashion industry. Nowaday's people call a GSD a GSD if it has a low arse and if it is a black and tan sadle dog. Every year we see dogs entering the ring and even passing with dangerously low backs. People love them they think that they look gorgeous. We can NOT breed for such dogs. We will not breed for such traits. Take anyone of these so-called beautifull dogs and get them to run aside any of our dogs you will see the difference immediatley. We do not understand the human mentality of doing such damage to the breed for looks and we can not understand the breeders mentality for this either. If looks is so critical for you aswell buy a painting to decorate your home or a sculpture. Keep in mind that there are simple very simple rules with breeding dogs. Dogs pass down physical appereance and charecter to their offspring. If one is to worry purely about looks and breed for the looks then they are loosing vital traits such as physic, charecter etc. on the way. If you take a close look at GSD's called the working line and the show-line dogs you will automatically see big difference's. Now use your common sence if to get best working ability and health from the breed looks change so much think of the exact opposite of how much of the working ability is lost in the show lines. Or think why are army or police German Shepherd Dogs so different to the show line ones?
We have allways bred our dogs to the true breed standards with the procedure described below. However we and many other breeders believe that German Shepherd Dogs are working dogs and that in reality their is only one type of German Shepherd Dog and that is what is known today as the Working Stok! unfortunately a Von Raben bred German shepherd dog and another show-line dog is calssed according to the same standard international clubs. This is why us and breeders alike ourselves wish to be easily distinguished and that is why we as Von Raben German Shepherd Dogs have joined the GSDC (The GSDC is currently in progress of changing all of their standards to that of the IWGSDC) and are now using their standards. Stephanitz the former of the SV and the person we owe the existance of German Shepherd Dogsopenly stated that: Looks are un-important the importance of the German Shepherd Dog is it's utility, charecter, and temperament. We can all openly see that registries even though stateing this are registering and giving high points to the crippled so called GSD's. On the other hand the IWGSDC is holding a very firm approach and are even disqualifying dogs that were supposed to be working lines because the dog didn't fit it's true meaning: Healthy, genetic disorder free, proper temperament, high working ability and utility, ceanness of working with humans...
