Yes the German shepherd Dog, the German wolfdog, the Alsation are all the same dog. However the K9 IS NOT a German Shepherd Dog.
K9: This is a word derived from canine which means dog. Today the word K9 simply means that the dog in question whatever breed it is, is a service dog of the police or military.
The original name, the German Shepherd Dog, was due to the world wars not a name that dog fanciers wanted to use, Germany was the enemy, so the German Shepherd Dog lover at the time prefered to use the name Alsation.
The German Wolf dog: As with everyth,ng in life money unfortunately ends up as the name of the game. Back in the time the wolf was believed to be an extra quality in dogs blood. Any dog with wolf in it had a high value. The German Shepherd due to its appereance was nicknamed as a wolf dog. Even though wolves were far ansectors and not in the direct creation of the dog in recent history. Today this nameing is not used in developed countries.
So, we know understand that the German Wolf dog and the Alsation is the same dog. So what about Show, Pet, Sport, and Working Lines.
Oh yes, a little more confusing.
Show Line German Shepherd Dogs are German Shepherd Dogs that come down from an ancestrial line of Show Quality dogs. These dogs tend to be 'more appealing' to the eye of the observer when standing. The show world has decided the look and colour of dog that appeals the most, obviously varying by country and each countrys standard. With the best look in mind breeders breed to achive the same physical features coat length, pattern, and colour. The downfall is that they outcasted all that didn't fit the description desired for. Many quick profit wanters and the never ending list of breeders who know nothing about the breed and set of with two dogs that they once purchased with business in mind have ruined the race. Only a very few true breeders exist today whome have managed to keep the balance between looks and charecter are left.
Sport German Shepherd Dogs are the German Shepherd Dogs bred for a dog with the anatomical looks of the desired Show dog but breeding is chosen from dogs that have a high ball drive and like barking. These dogs are bred for the dog sports such as Schutzhund in mind. They are swifter and stronger then the general Show dogs of today. These dogs were once working dogs but the sport has caused these dogs to become more frail than before. Breeders of the sport dog type are breeders of the Show world who fell in love with working dogs and tried to breed working dogs but with the Show dog mentality in mind. These dogs are becoming more popular as the day passes. unfortunately though these dogs are actually working dogs who have been altered through selective breeding into dogs that are no longer worthy of true stress featured work. Some Working Line breeders today have switched from working stok mentality to sport stok mentality so that they have higher chances in competitions such as Schutzhund and are able to continue making a living.
Working Line German Shepherd Dogs These are the closest dogs to the German Shepherd Dog of Stephanitz time. It is a true pity that only a handfull of breeders have survived to this day. Working Line breeders breed their dogs without the wory of competing or showing their dogs, they live with the principles that Max von Stephanitz once laid. Stephanitz was unhappy with the Show ring, he was also against sport dog breeding. Stephanitz was able to make the breed come to life not with dogs living in luxury but with the dogs that worked on farms. He once saved these dogs from extinction and today a handfull of breeders are doing their best to continue keeping these dogs around. But each day the number of breeders fall in number, breeding a dog that just about everybody looks at and says thats not a GSD is not easy. Working Dog Breeding is Stephanitz breeding it is breeding with work ability in mind solely. Charecter and anatomy come before looks and colour for that is what the true breeding policy once was. These are the working dogs the service dogs the utile dogs not the dogs of today that have been down categorized as a trotting dog!
When you buy a book about dogs and read about the temperament and working qualities of the German Shepherd Dog, being good with children, love to work, endless endurance, protection instincts etc. this is the dog that the book is talking about.
Pet: Any German shepherd Dog that does not fall in the above categories that is he isn't good enough to work, he isn't good enough to get high ranked in eg. Schutzhund, he won't be in the top dogs shown or he is from a bad breeding that didnt workout or was a dog 'manufactured' in a puppy mill or was born in the hands of a backyard breeder is known as a Pet quality dog. The dangeour of these dogs is that they are a lottery ticket, you may win and end up with a fine example or you may get stuck with a dog that has faults. eg. fear biting, genetic problems, extremely passive, missing testis, etc. etc. etc. Pet qulity dogs are generally sold to pet shops in order for the breeder to not have his name envolved.
PLEASE DO NOTE: I personally know of breeders whome compete in Schutzhund etc. who have fine dogs and other breeders of show quality dogs who also have fine quality dogs. THE ABOVE STATEMENTS ARE GENERALIZATIONS, BUT UNFORTUNATELY THE ABOVE STATEMENTS ARE FOR THE MAJORITY!
