"A good judge must know the anatomy of the body and the science of breeding thoroughly well and, must be fully capable of determining what should be the nature and the duties of the race. He must be free from the narrowness of mind which confines its energies to the discovery of failings, or in biassed preferences in relation to physical beauty, and he must finally remind himself that his sole duty is to serve the interests of the race, to secure sound conditions of keeping for the dogs, to promote their progress in breeding excellence and efficiency, and he must not be influenced either by the ambition or greed of individuals, nor by the only too often ill-directed greed of individuals, nor by the only too often ill-directed whim of the market...."
