Due to my carrier I have met countless people of the ‘trade’ among the years all over the world during trails, seminars and festivals.
With my hand on my heart I can honestly say that there are not many quality dogs on the island. Yes, even though we often here but my dogs mum is so and so and dad is so and so, my dogs got a pedigree, he has a passport… the fact lies in front of us not many are what one thinks they are. I have decided to share the reasons behind this.
From worst to bad;
Dogs with a passport:
Actually there is no such thing as a passport carrying dog in the aspect people think. If there was they would go through passport control as us humans do going through passport control and receiving a visa stamp. In reality they are health certificates stating that they are not carrying certain diseases and that they have full vaccinations that has been decided to be a requirement by certain countries. Dogs carrying such certificates are allowed to travel freely between countries that are in the system thus not requiring any extra work or stays in quarantine. This being said it is not hard to understand that any well dog can receive such paperwork whether purebred or not, breeder sold or a rescue. A dog with such a passport cannot be expected to be a purebred as many or tricked into thinking.
Dogs from a pet shop: I have nothing to say against pet shops that are owned by breeders. Have you ever wondered where pet shops who do not self breed acquire dogs from?
- By following personal ads in newspapers
- Dogs sold to popshops by people who’s dogs ‘accidently’ gave birth
- Dogs acquired from so-called breeders or ‘excess stock’
Imports: As a good breeder I have never been able to fulfill demand just like all other good breeders. The reason for this is that a good breeder is not a factory and can only manage a certain number of litters per year. Only one or two places have managed to prove themselves to reputable breeders. So one must ask what are the other import dogs in reality? To answer this; sometimes a breeder will have a dog that does not fit required criteria’s or has genetic problems. Some breeders put such dogs down others sell them to pet shops far away in order to protect their name. bad breeders such as puppy mills (alike chicken farms) sell their ‘products’ to pet shops in different regions sometimes with a genuine pedigree and sometimes with a fake pedigree. The reason that they do not sell in their home town is to not cause suspicion on amount which will draw authorities to them. Many times such places have championships on a day to day basis allowing every dog in their possession to become a champion! (haven’t you ever wondered how it comes that nearly every dog owner that you come across tells you that their dog is the son of so and so champion.)
A good quality dog is sold with a HEALTH and BREED GUARANTEE Certificate signed and stamped by the breeder. Else one will end up adopting a dog from a ‘don’t worry I’m the guarantee’ type of talk.
Dogs entering the TRNC from South Cyprus from a population of million and others entering from Turkey with a population 70 million! Wasn’t the demand of millions enough requiring these dogs to be sold to a country market of a couple of hundred thousand! Not seeing this tragic comic event should really be our own embarrassment!
A dog holding a pedigree is not a dog holding a certificate stating that it is of breed standard and flawless, it’s a paper stating its family tree. Only by adopting a dog from a reputable breeder willing to sign and stamp an agreement protecting you and the dog will you know that you have adopted a dog that will be everything you read about the breed no more no less! Otherwise you will only be gambling hoping what the future beholds.
